Subrosa Group CEO Niall Burns attends the Security & Policing event

Subrosa Group CEO Niall Burns attended the Security & Policing event earlier this week, where discussions focused on key issues affecting the UK’s security sector.

During the event, Niall sat in on the presentation on Martyn’s Law, where Figen Murray spoke powerfully about her years of campaigning following the loss of her son in the Manchester Arena bombing. Her determination continues to drive important change in how public venues approach security and preparedness.

It was also valuable to hear from Shaun Hipgrave from the Home Office and Michelle Russell, Chief Executive of the Security Industry Authority, on the future direction of regulation and standards within the private security industry.

During the discussion, Niall raised concerns about malpractice among some training providers and the WhatsApp groups openly advertising security guard rates well below the minimum wage, for example £9.40 per hour. Addressing these issues is essential if the industry is to maintain professional standards and protect those working within it.

There was strong language from both the Home Office and the SIA on the need to improve standards and enforcement across the sector. While many may view such discussions as “just words”, there was a clear sense of resolve from both organisations that meaningful improvements are needed.

Security business licensing was also discussed. In many countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, it is not possible to establish a security company without a formal business licence. Introducing similar measures in the UK would represent an important step forward in strengthening professionalism and accountability within the industry.

We encourage those working across the security sector to contribute to the current consultation, which closes today:
